ARAI is the family name of the professor and the abbreviation of Advanced
Robotics with Artificial Intelligence.
The aim of the lab is ARAI and studies on various intelligent systems.
The lab is operated with Yokoi Lab and Ota Lab as a group of Intelligent
Systems Lab.
We have proposed Service Engineering since 2002.

Research themes
- Manipulation: Graspless Manipulation has been studied with Dr. Aiyama, who is now a lecturer
in Tsukuba Univ. and Dr. Maeda, who is now a lecturer in Yokohama National
Univ. Now we try to move a large object by a small robot.
- Design of Intelligent Environment: The environment of robots must support the intelligence of the working
robots. We have proposed the best use of 2D bar codes.
- Skills and their combination: Human workers have various skills but iti is difficult to apply them
to appropriate application. We apply skills to an application with our
idea, then the combined skills are adjusted and optimized.
- RoboCup:Our team ARAIBO have joined 4-legged robot league in RoboCup since 1999.
The game uses AIBO manufactured by SONY. ARAIBO stands for Advanced Robotics
with Artificial Intelligence for Ball Operations. The target of research
covers Monte Carlo Localization and Strategy generation by DP.
- Service Engineering: A new engineering paradigm "Service Engineering" started in
RACE, and now is enhanced in ARAI Lab. It represents service from the viewpoints
of consumers.
